Use of Self for Leaders: A Conversation with Dave Jamieson

This is the thirteenth video produced in the ‘Just in Case…’ mini-series sponsored by Quality and Equality. In this video we are joined by Dave Jamieson, one of the most prolific authors and scholar-practitioners in the field, with over 50 years of experience consulting, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organization Development Network (ODN). Dave is central to the development and publishing of the Global Use of Self Research Report (https://www.quality-equality.com/uosreport). It was a true privilege to partner with such a sharp and brilliant thinker on this topic. Today, Dave explores a very important application of this cornerstone concept of OD… ”Use of Self” for Leaders by unpacking the following three questions:

  1. What do we mean when we talk about Use of Self for leaders?

  2. What do the best leaders do that set them apart?

  3. What kind of development can leaders do to become their best selves?

Articles, Books, and References

This 55-minute video serves as a foundational overview of Use of Self, with Dave sharing the evolutions of the theory developed by himself and his colleagues, how the best leaders use their ‘selves’ in service of the organization, and then provides very practical first steps to begin one’s own development.  We hope you’ve learned some key practices and will find some opportunities to discuss this topic with a small group of colleagues to as a good way to learn and grow.
